About the Reading Score

The "Reading Score" is the Flesch Reading Ease score. It's a widely used readability test that tells you how easy a piece of text is to understand. The score is a number from 0 to 100, where a higher score means the text is easier to read.

It is calculated using a formula that considers two main factors:

  • Average Sentence Length (ASL): The number of words divided by the number of sentences. Shorter sentences are easier to read.
  • Average Syllables per Word (ASW): The number of syllables divided by the number of words. Words with fewer syllables are easier to read.
Score School Level (U.S.) Notes
90–100 5th grade Very easy to read. Easily understood by an average 11-year-old student.
60–70 8th & 9th grade Plain English. Easily understood by 13- to 15-year-old students.
30–50 College Fairly difficult to read.
0–30 College graduate Very difficult to read. Best understood by university graduates.

About the Read Time

The "Read Time" is an estimation of how long it will take an average person to read the text. It is calculated based on the average reading speed of an adult, which is around 225 words per minute (WPM).

The formula is simple: the total number of words in your text is divided by 225. The result is then rounded up to the nearest minute.
